Looking Ahead:

Portraits from the Mott-Warsh Collection

The theme of the exhibition, Looking Ahead:  Portraits from the Mott-Warsh Collection, is the portrayal of the African head in representational and conceptual portraiture.  The modern and contemporary artists featured in this exhibition, both directly and indirectly, explore the social, political and cultural nuances of the African face and head in fine art and popular visual culture.  Work by the following artists are featured in this exhibition:  Charles Alston, Emma Amos, Robert Arneson, Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Mary Borgman, Elizabeth Catlett, Chuck Close, Diane Edison, Chester Higgins, Jr., Whitfield Lovell, Robert Mapplethorpe, Alison Saar, Hank Willis Thomas, Mildred Thompson, Charles White, Peter Williams, John Wilson, Richard Wyatt, Jr. and Richard Yarde.

This exhibition features artwork in a variety of media:  drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture.  Several of the works are small, intimate pieces, while other works are larger in scale and domineering in their presence.

Looking Ahead:  Portraits from the Mott-Warsh Collection is organized by the Mott-Warsh Collection, Flint, Michigan.  The curator for the exhibition is Camille Ann Brewer.  A catalog is forthcoming.

This exhibition is currently available for tour and can be scheduled by contacting Smith Kramer Traveling Exhibitions.
