The theme of the exhibition, Looking Ahead: Portraits from the Mott-Warsh Collection, is the portrayal of the African head in representational and conceptual portraiture. The modern and contemporary artists featured in this exhibition, both directly and indirectly, explore the social, political, and cultural nuances of the African face and head in fine art and popular visual culture.
Work by the following artists is featured in this exhibition: Charles Alston, Emma Amos, Robert Arneson, Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Mary Borgman, Elizabeth Catlett, Chuck Close, Diane Edison, Chester Higgins Jr., Whitfield Lovell, Robert Mapplethorpe, Alison Saar, Hank Willis Thomas, Mildred Thompson, Charles White, Peter Williams, John Wilson, Richard Wyatt Jr., and Richard Yarde.
This exhibition features artwork in a variety of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture. Several of the works are small, intimate pieces, while others are larger in scale and domineering.
