Artist Biography
Nate Young (b. 1981)
Nate Young is a multidisciplinary artist who works across media in a manner that challenges traditional modes of artistic production. He creates works that engage with issues of race and racialization. He explores the systems and objects that impact one’s beliefs. Often in his work, Young addresses theological themes through text, diagrams, or architectural elements. His works contain a quiet gravitas and austerity seemingly at odds with their meticulously hand-crafted nature, prompting a post-minimalist interrogation of authority, material, and the artist’s hand. Young is intentionally ambiguous about how these religious forms should be perceived, allowing the viewer to insert their own perceptions.
Young lives and works in Chicago, IL. He received his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA and a BA in Visual Arts Education from Northwestern College, St. Paul, MN. He completed a residency (2009) at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, ME and was invited back as Dean in 2015. Since 2016, he has been an assistant professor in the department of art, School of Art & Art History at the University of Illinois, Chicago. His work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally.
