Crosscurrents
Intercultural Conversations In Art

March 10 - August 19, 2023

Crosscurrents showcases the work of artists whose intercultural experiences have permeated their art in remarkable ways. The exhibit contains art by African-American expatriates, works made using materials and techniques influenced by the artistic practices of other cultures, and art that responds to shared histories, global crises and the legacy of the African diaspora. Drawn from the expansive Mott-Warsh Collection of art, featured artists include Beauford Delaney, Omar Victor Diop, Awol Erizku, Jacob Lawrence, Christopher Myers, Ebony G. Patterson, Howardena Pindell, Alison Saar, Yinka Shonibare, and Mildred Thompson, among others.

Mwangi Hutter, Equinox, 2017, single channel video, sound. 9:11 min. loop

Mwangi Hutter is an artist duo with one persona. Working in photography, video, installation and performance, the couple’s unification resists fixed notions of identity based on race, gender, and culture. Their works can be seen as a conciliation of contrasts, such as female-male, African-European, black-white, and the borders that separate individuals.
